Starting a Career as a Yoga teacher

If you currently do yoga and can assume the harder positions such as the 'triangle yoga pose', then perhaps you could become a yoga teacher. With more and more people taking up yoga to improve their fitness and balance, there are plenty of opportunities for those that wish to teach, taking advantage of a Yoga teacher jobsmarket that has seen increased interest from those with plenty of leisure time and money.

Yoga Teacher Beginning

To become a yoga teacher, you obviously need to have been doing yoga for a number of years to know what is required for the sport. You will also need to be familiar with anatomy, the philosophy behind yoga, muscle alignment, and for yourself to have a good sense of business management and finance.

To be fully registered as a yoga teacher, you will need to undertake a Yoga Teacher's Diploma that is organised by The British Wheel of Yoga (BWY). To attain this qualification, you will have to undertake a basic foundation course before doing over 300 hours of study time and 200 hours of intensive yoga training. Altogether, this course can take up to three years to complete.

It may seem like a long time, but as yoga teachers are traditionally freelance, it is unlikely that any health centres or sports clubs will hire you without one, namely for insurance purposes. Once you have the qualification however, you can go about organising your own business around your hours, teaching whatever group of people you wish – from young children, to the old to those recovering from injuries.
