The World Sauna Championships
One of the biggest events of the year for sauna is the World Sauna Championships which take place in Finland annually. These championships pit the toughest sauna competitors with competitors sat in saunas and trying to withstand extreme high temperatures for the longest possible time.
The competition often involves more than 150 competitors and they come from 20 plus countries including Russia, Finland, Estonia, Germany and Norway. Temperatures often are in excess of 220 Fahrenheit.
Finnish competitors do tend to dominate the country as the main provider for competitors, unsurprising perhaps considering the is said to be invented in Finland.
The competition has not been running for over 10 years, having started in 1999 and every winner for the men's competition has been from Finland. Women also compete against each other and Leila Kulin of Finland has now won several years in a row.
