Onsen, Japan. Japenese hot tubs, spa and sauna

Onsen in Japan are natural hot springs and they are often usually in the Japenese countryside or in the mountains, offering you Japenese onchenrelaxation and great views at the same time. These days more and more onchen may be found indoors but traditional ones always outdoors.

Onsen use thermal spa waters and according to who you listen to, the waters can help healing and are great for relaxation. Bathing at onsen tends to be men only or women only although some countryside onsen due allow mixed bathing.

Swim wear is not usually permitted, but many people use a small towel to cover their provate parts as they slip into the water. It is also commonly expected that you scrub and clean yourself before entering the water

Some onsen I would recommend are:

  • Hakone Yumoto onsen, Kanagawa-ken - Go on the Odakyu line from Tokyo Shinjuku station to Hakone-yumoto station.
  • Yufuin, Ooita-ken - An excellent onsen in Kyushu
