Mother’s Day poetry

Almost all of our famous writers have written about their mothers. Whether it is a paean to the importance of motherly love, a celebration of the feminine, or a personal thank you to their own mothers, writers the world over have used mothers as their artistic muse. Here we take a look at some of these famous poets and their poems about mothers and motherhood.

19th Century English poet Christina Georgina Rosseti who wrote primarily devotional poems recognised the importance of motherly love, writing several poems in honour of her mother. Her first ever poem is entitled To My Mother, and her poem Sonnets Are Full Of Love concerns the bond between mother and child.

Literary genius Rudyard Kipling who brought us his famous fables, and poems Mandalay, If, and Gunga Din also celebrated his mother in poetic form. His renowned work Mother O’ Mine speaks of the unshakable strength of maternal love.

American writer Edgar Allan Poe may be best known for his macabre and mysterious tales, but he too wrote fondly of the power of the maternal love. His 1849 poem To My Mother speaks of the devotion of mothers to their children. His own mother died when he was very young, and this poem in fact addressed to his mother-in-law and aunt Maria Clemm.

Another famous American poet, Walt Whitman, often called the father of free verse, recognised the way that mothers shape their children, as well as the differences between maternal and paternal love in his 19th Century poem There Was A Child Went Forth.

If you are looking for a suitable gift for your mother on Mothers Day, why not include a special poem about the importance of motherly love. You could include it in a Mothers Day card, have the poem specially framed, or include it as a special message with a bouquet of flowers. Florists like Interflora will often include messages with their bouquets of Mothers Day flowers completely free of charge.
